The Mask – Ami Kins

He told me I was too black

I’d never make a sale

He said I was too ghetto

I’d only end up in jail

He said my nose was too big, my lips too plump, my hips too thick

And for years I tried to hide till it made me sick

Then my Father spoke and I heard his voice

I made you, He said, you are my choice

Your beautiful black skin kisses from the sun

Your sweet southern accent

Marks from the battles your ancestors won

That nose, those lips, sweet hips are every man’s fantasy

You are wonderfully made, a masterpiece, filled with divinity
