Adventure Begins With Imagination: Helping Young Readers Discover New Worlds

Give a child a book, and suddenly almost anything becomes possible.

A forest can hide an incredible surprise. A dragon can become part of an unforgettable adventure. A big truck can take a young reader somewhere they’ve never been before.

That’s the wonderful thing about imagination.

Children’s author William D. McCreary creates stories that invite young readers to explore, wonder, and discover. His books include My Dad Is a Big Truck Driver, A Hidden Surprise in the Forest, and A Little Boy and a Dragon.

For children, imagination isn’t simply entertainment.

It’s an important part of learning.

When children imagine what might happen next in a story, they’re learning to think creatively. When they picture characters and places, they’re building worlds inside their minds. When they ask questions about why a character made a particular decision, they’re developing comprehension and critical-thinking skills.

Books provide a wonderful doorway into that process.

A child doesn’t need expensive equipment or a plane ticket to explore somewhere new.

They only need a story.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers can encourage that imagination by making reading interactive.

Ask a child, “What do you think happens next?”

Ask them to draw their favorite character.

Let them create a different ending.

After finishing the book, ask them what adventure they would like to have.

Suddenly reading becomes more than an activity. It becomes an experience.

Stories also give children permission to dream beyond the world they currently know.

That matters.

Today’s young reader may become tomorrow’s author, teacher, artist, engineer, truck driver, scientist, or entrepreneur. Imagination helps children begin seeing possibilities before they’re old enough to understand how to achieve them.

William D. McCreary’s children’s stories provide families with opportunities to read, laugh, talk, imagine, and explore together.

The next great adventure doesn’t necessarily begin with packing a suitcase.

Sometimes it begins when a child opens a book and reads the very first page.

Open a book. Turn the page. Let the adventure begin.
