Rating: ★★★★☆

“The Wife App” by Carolyn Mackler is a delightful and humorous debut into adult fiction that revolves around the lives of three best friends on a mission to reclaim their worth and happiness after their ex-husbands take them for granted. This heartwarming story weaves themes of love, revenge, redemption, and the true meaning of friendship into a compelling and entertaining narrative.

The novel introduces us to Lauren, Madeline, and Sophie, three strong and relatable women facing different challenges in their post-divorce lives. Lauren, a devoted mother of twins, uncovers a shocking secret that shatters her marriage. Madeline, seemingly having it all, is confronted with the possibility of losing her daughter to her ex, stirring up old personal tragedies. Meanwhile, Sophie is grappling with financial insecurities and a fear of missing out while hiding her true desires from everyone, even herself.

The plot kicks off when the friends, during a tipsy night out, jokingly discuss monetizing the mental load of being a wife. Their half-serious idea turns into reality as they create the “Wife App,” a venture designed to make wives’ efforts and contributions financially rewarding. The concept is clever, and readers will find themselves rooting for the trio as they navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and juggle newfound love interests.

The characters are the heart and soul of this novel. Lauren, Madeline, and Sophie are well-developed, each with their unique voices and struggles. The camaraderie and support they provide each other are heartwarming and serve as a powerful reminder of the strength of female friendships. As they face challenges and unexpected consequences, the growth and evolution of their characters make for a satisfying and emotionally resonant read.

Mackler skillfully incorporates humor into the narrative, creating moments that will make readers both laugh and reflect on the intricacies of modern relationships. The witty dialogue and sharp observations on the dynamics of marriage and divorce add a layer of depth to the story. The author’s writing style is engaging and accessible, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in the lives of these women.

The exploration of love, both romantic and platonic, is a standout aspect of the book. The relationships that bloom between the characters are beautifully depicted, demonstrating that love can come in various forms and stages of life. The inclusion of redemption arcs for some characters adds an element of growth and self-discovery that leaves a lasting impression.

While “The Wife App” is a highly enjoyable read, there are moments when the plot feels slightly rushed, especially in the latter part of the book where certain developments could have been explored in more detail. Additionally, some subplots could have been further fleshed out to enhance the overall richness of the story.

“The Wife App” is a hilarious and heartwarming tale of friendship, empowerment, and finding happiness after heartbreak. Carolyn Mackler’s foray into adult fiction is a success, with engaging characters and a clever premise that keeps readers entertained from start to finish. Fans of contemporary women’s fiction will thoroughly enjoy this witty and uplifting novel that celebrates the resilience of women and the beauty of love in all its forms.
